M. Chinnaswamy Stadium: The Pride of Bangalore

The city of Bangalore has many things to take pride upon, but the best one is that in the field of sports, it has an International Cricket Stadium. The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium adds to the prestige of the city; and is enough to signify the importance and popularity of sports in the city. The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium is one of the oldest stadiums of India. It is owned by the Government of Karnataka. It has been named after Mr. M Chinnaswamy who served the Karnataka State Cricket Association and was also the president of the BCCI. The stadium has a sitting capacity of approx 36,000 people. It continuously hosts Test Matches, ODI matches, and other matches.

The foundation of the stadium was laid down 1969. The first match was played during the year 1972-73. The first Test series was hosted by it on November 22-29, 1974. India registered its first Test victory on this ground in the year 1976-77 playing against the team of England. The first ODI match was played on September 6, 1982 and India recorded its victory against Sri Lanka in that match. The stadium also played host to Sunil Gavaskar's memmorable innings, when India went down to Pakistan in the series decider in 1987. In 2007, in a Test Match between India Vs Pakistan, Sourav Ganguly and Yuvraj Singh lead a 300 run partnership that was the highest partnership at the stadium.

After Bangalore launched its team in IPL, the stadium is a home ground to the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

There are several records for which the stadium grabs attention. Some of the records are:

Test Records- Highest innings total: India 626/all out played between India and Pakistan in 2007.

Highest individual score: 267 – Younis Khan, played between Pakistan and India in 2005.

Best innings bowling: 7–27 – Maninder Singh, played between India and Pakistan in 1987.

ODI Records- Highest total: 383–6 , played between India and Australia in 2013.

Highest individual score: 209 which has been scored by Rohit Sharma
