Swimming is one of the best recreational sport which burns lots of calories and makes a person fit. This sport has  got lots of acclaimed  in the tournaments. This sport not only nurtured the talent of many sports persons, but has also given us the best swimmers in the world. Lets have a look at the World’s best swimmers:

1.    Mark The Shark - ( original name Mark Andrew Spitz)  is a retired American Swimmer who  was named as the World Swimmer Of the Year in 1969, 1971 and 1972.  Between 1968 and 1972, Spitz won nine Olympic golds, five Pan American golds, 31 US Amateur Athletic Union Titles and eight National Collegiate Athletic Association titles. During those years he has set  33 world records which is considered one of the best performance by any swimmer.

2.   Michael Phelps - named as Baltimore Bullet is an American swimmer who holds the record of winning the World Swimmer of the Year award  for six times and American Swimmer of the Year Award for eight times. He has won  a total fifty- nine medals in major international competition, fifty gold, seven, silver and two bronze in the Olympics, the World  Championships and in the Pan Pacific Championships. He has also won 16 Olympic medals ie. Six gold, two bronze at Athens in 2004, eight gold at Beijing in 2008 and this has made him broke all the records of any achiever till now.

 3.  Grant Hackett - is a famous Australian Former Swimmer who has won 10 World Championship gold medals. One of his best performances was seen in the men’s 1500 meter freestyle race at both the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. He is named as the “ greatest distance swimmers in history”. Not only this he is also a world record holder in the 1500m and 800m freestyle.

4.     Kistina Egerszegi - is one of the greatest Hungarian Olympic Champions of the modern era. She is a three time Olympian ( 1988,1992,1996) and five times Olympic champion. Not only this, she is one of the rare swimmer who has won the same swimming event at three consecutive Summer Olympics. She is also a former World record holder.

5.  Matthew Nicholas Biondi - is a former American swimmer  who is an eleven-times Olympic medalist  and  a former world- record holder in five events. During his career, he has set  three individual world records in 50-meter freestyle and four in the 100 meter freestyle.  In the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, Biondi won five gold medals, setting a world records in the 50 meter freestyle and three relay events.
